A night out at the circus is always guaranteed to put a smile on my face. The awesome acts and the smell of hot popcorn filling the big top, usually followed by a hot-dog before heading home is great way to spend an evening. At Gifford’s Circus this all applies, but with something a little more special to finish off the night beneath the stars.
Circus Sauce Travelling Restaurant Circus Sauce is the UK’s only travelling restaurant, offering a unique experience serving a 3 course meal after the last circus show finishes every evening.
At first glance the restaurant truly is a marvellous site. Working from two beautiful, traditional showman wagons, the 60 seat dining area is a feast on the eyes. Long, candlelit oak tables covered in mismatched Emma Bridgewater crockery (I was in my element!) and the walls of the awning covered in bespoke vintage tapestries creates a surprisingly cosy and extremely unique feel. Locally Sourced, The Circus Sauce menu, unlike any other restaurant I know, changes weekly. Every Thursday a new 3-course meal is announced and is different to the one of the previous week. The ingredients used in the incredible meals made are all sourced locally from each area the circus travels to. Chefs in Circus Sauce work tirelessly to source local produce, from local farmers/smallholders, butchers, greengrocers and the like. This alone gives me a really warm feeling inside; a taste of the good life on a larger scale.
Gifford’s Circus tends to visit the same areas year on year and therefore the Chefs are able to build up a relationship with the local producers and know what to expect from them when they arrive which helps in the planning!
‘The Most Sought After Supper Club of 2018?’
The Daily Telegraph recently wrote that Circus Sauce is the most sought after supper club of 2018 and I am not surprised. The ambience is perfect, the staff attentive and the food exceptional. We were lucky enough to be seated next to the family of one of the chefs and found out that many of the them working in the Circus Sauce kitchen have some incredible experience, even working in Michelin star restaurants.
As well as preparing the food for the evening meal, the chefs also make all of the food for the wagons dotted around the show ground for people to enjoy before and during the show. Freshly made pizzas and cakes are there to tempt your tastebuds and keep you happy if you aren’t eating at Circus Sauce afterwards.
Our Menu for the Evening Rustic yet with an extravagant feel, everything we ate in the restaurant was cooked to perfection, and served on large platters for the diners to dig into.
There is a casual feel about Circus Sauce, diners take their own alcohol which seems to flow freely and the atmosphere is a lively and happy one. At the end of the main meal, when tables have been cleared in the anticipation of a delicious dessert, there is an unexpected surprise. I won’t ruin it for anyone who has yet to visit Circus Sauce but I will say it involves the chefs & lots of laughs!
The Details
Supper starts at £30 for adults & £20 for children aged 14 and under (price varies dependent on location) Although children are welcome at Circus Sauce, in my opinion it is more suitable for older children/teenagers due to the late start (approximately 8.30/9pm) As mentioned above it is a bring your own alcohol venue. Water is given to every table and coffee after dessert but I did not see any soft drinks available so it is probably best to take your own.
Circus Sauce gets booked up fast so if you are thinking of going along, or giving someone the gift of going, don’t hesitate – you won’t regret it. I can’t wait to make an excuse to go again!
